Noted in the 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874): "The font has an octagonal bowl upon a circular stem and more ancient base." Noted in Long (1923) as one of about half-dozen known examples belonging to the Decorated [or 'Second Pointed'] period in Dorset [NB: these include: Hampreston, Nether Compton, West Stafford and Winterborne Compton, as well as the basin of Durweston and, perhaps, Woolland]. In The Dorset Historic Churches Trust: "The Purbeck stone font dates originally from 13C, but was probably re-cut in the 15C [http://dorsethistoricchurchestrust.co.uk/hampreston.htm] -- The font consists of a shallow octagonal basin with a chamfered underbowl and stem, all probably altered from the original shape of the old basin; it is raised on an octagonal shelf-shaped lower base and a cross-shaped plinth, both of alater date. Flat octagonal wooden cover, appears modern.
