Barnes (1891) notes that, although the font may be of the late Norman period, it "however, has no trace of the staples for fastening the cover, which are generally to be found in ancient fonts." Listed in Long (1923) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. In Newman & Pevsner (1972): "Font. The base is C13, with spurs." The font, of composite nature, consists of a large square basin with chamfered angles, raised on a pedestal stem made of blocks, on a square base decorated with spurs at 90-degree angles. Illustrated in The Dorset Historic Churches [http://dorsethistoricchurchestrust.co.uk]. Described and fully illustrated in Gerald Duke [www.martinstown.co.uk].
