There is an enret for this Fordington [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SY6990/fordington/] [accessed 19 February 2022] but it mentions neither priest nor church in it. During his visit to this church in October 1825, Glynne (1923) noted: "The font is octagonal, and panneled with quatrefoils containing shields, the pedestal is also panneled and has a hollow band of square flowers just below the basin." Noted in the 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874): "The font is octagonal, with the quatrefoil and shield on each face, and is of the fifteenth century. In Barnes (1891): "Font. Perpendicular, 15th century." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as Perpendicular. Noted in Long (1923) as a "good example of the quatrefoil type of bowl" of the enriched octagonal fonts of the Perpendicular period. In the RCHM (1970). In Newman & Pevsner (1972): "Font. Octahgonal, Perp[endicular], with shields in quatrefoils." Described and illustrated in Gerald Duke [www.martinstown.co.uk]. The font has two (?) sides of the basin and the stem cpmpletely plain, which is a likely indication that the font was originally intended to be placed against a corner [it is unlikely that this font was simply 'unfinished' for lack of payments, death of the artisan, etc.] [NB: we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church]. [cf. Index entry for Fordington No. 1for the 17th-century (?) stoup in this church].
