There is an entry for Chilcombe [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SY5291/chilcombe/] [accessed 3 July 2018], but it mentions neither priest nor church in it. Long (1923) writes: "The font at Chilcombe is a particularly rich example of 12th-century work with double cable moulding and foliage, and tongue-shaped ornament round the bottom of the bowl." In Mee (1939): "Norman font bowl decorated with cable moulding and a ring of arches." Noted in the RCHM (1952). In Newman & Pevsner (1972): "Font. Norman, with two modest ornamental bands." A full description, measurements and photographs of this font can be found in Gerald Duke's web site [www.martinstown.co.uk/WEBSITE/VILLAGE/FONT/chilcombefont.htm]. The entry for this church in the CRSBI (2018) notes: "Romanesque features include the font and some fragments inserted into the S doorway. The font is located in the SW corner of the nave. The bowl is circular, formed from a grey limestone. It has a chamfer around its rim, with, below, two rows of cable moulding arranged at an angle to form a herring-bone pattern. The lower part of the bowl is hemispherical, with a row of large raised stylized scallops or leaves, with two small receding roll-mouldings underneath. The chamfered rim has wide vertical toothed-chiselled tooling, the tooling on the rest of the bowl is smaller and more irregular. the rim shows sings of repairs on the W side, while the S and E side have later insertions where once the hinge and hasp to the cover were. There is no lead lining to the basin, which has straight sides and a flat base. The bowl is set on a concave tapering circular drum with a roll-moulding at its foot, all on a circular base set on a large square plinth. These are of a pale buff limestone, probably early 20thc.
