There is an entry for Buckland [Newton] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST6905/buckland-newton/] [accessed 3 June 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor curch in it. During his visit to this church on 12 October 1825, Glynne (1923) noted: "The font is octagonal, having its sides ornamented with square flowers." Noted in the 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874) with a citation from the original edition: "The font, which is large and handsome, of an octagonal form, and ornamented with foliage, stands directly opposite the door leading to the room over the porch". Noted in Long (1923) as a "good specimen" of the enriched octagonal font of the Perpendicular period, decorated with foliage. In Mee (1939) as "a font carved with flowers", of the 15th century. In Newman & Pevsner (1972): "Font. Perp[endicular], octagonal, with big leaf motifs." The lower base, octagonal and chamfered, appears to be a modern replacement. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat, with metal decoration and ring handle; appears modern, probably Victorian.
