Font Notes:
There is an entry for Alton [Pancras] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/] [accessed 17 September 2016], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. A font in this church is reported in the 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874): "The font is late Perpendicular, an octagonal bowl, on a niched pedestal, with quatrefoils in which they are sculptured the rose, fleur-de-lis, pomegranate, and other Tudor badges." Noted in Long (1923) as a "good example of the quatrefoil type of bowl" of the enriched octagonal fonts of the Perpendicular period. In Newman & Pevsner (1972): "Font. Perp[endicular], octagonal, with quatrefoils." Modern font cover of flat octagonal shape.
