Noted in Mackenzie & Ross (1834) as a "fine old basin of Stanhope marble. In Fordyce (1857): "The font, a fine early [sic] English font of Frosterley marble, now restored to its proper place, was in the adjacent 'Hall' garden when the work of restoration was commenced in 1842, where it had become a picturesque, moss-covered ornament." Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports "a fine old font of Stanhope marble" in St. Michael's. The Victoria County History (Durham, vol. 3, 1928) notes: "With the exception of the vestry, which is a modern addition, the whole of the building is of early 13th-century date, and though successive alterations and restorations have destroyed many of its ancient features it still retains intact its original plan and in the main its mediaeval aspect. [...] The font consists of a circular bowl of Frosterley marble 29 in. in diameter on a circular shaft and is probably of the same date as the building. The bowl of a smaller font lies on the floor at the west end of the north aisle." Noted in Pevsner (1983): "Font. C13; Frosterley marble." A posting in Tom Willoughby' construction company's web page [www.tomwilloughby.co.uk/news/article/St_Michael_All_Angels_Church_Completion] [accessed 14 May 2018] informed of completion of works at the church "including repairing and relocating an old font".
