Scene Description: Source caption: "Ancient stone in south wall of Sinnington church. A tour around the outside and inside of All Saints church reveals several ancient stones dating back to the old Norman church which stood here previously. This appears to be the remains of a cross head showing Christ on the cross and may well be of Saxon origin."

view of church exterior - southwest view
Scene Description: Source caption: "All Saints church Sinnington. At first glance this village church looks unexciting, dating from a rebuild in 1904. However, closer inspection reveals a range of Norman details from the earlier church on this site. The 12thC west doorway can be seen in this view taken from the SW."

There is an entry for Sinnington [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE7485/sinnington/] [accessed 25 September 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Morris (1931) writes: "Stoup inside W. door." [NB: according to Morris (ibid.) the church goes back to the late 11th or early 12th century]. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 2, 1923) notes: "The walls of the present building are substantially of early 12th-century date and the church has never been enlarged. The south door is late Norman, the porch being a little later, and several 17th-century windows have been inserted in the walls. The church was thoroughly restored in 1904, when the north vestry was added and the chancel arch reconstructed. [...] Within the [south] door is a small stoup." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE7463886062] notes: "Church. C12 nave and chancel, restored; some C17 windows; vestry and bellcote of 1904, and chancel arch rebuilt. Restoration, rebuilding and additions by C Hodgson Fowler"; neither font nor stoup mentioned in it. The present font, located at the west end of the nave, by the blocked west entranceway, is modern.
