Church Notes: Noted in Pigot's Directory of 1834: "A new church was erected here by aid of the parliamentary commissioners, and was consecrated in the year 1830. It is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and is a neat edifice of Gothic architecture, containing nearly five hundred free sittings" [transcribed in: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Calverley/Calverley34.html]
On the "modern church perched on the hillside" [built in 1830] Mee (1941) notes: "One of its three fonts is from an older building no longer used as a church. Another, elaborately adorned, has a still more intricately carved cover like a star-shaped tower with a spire and flying buttresses." [NB: the older churches/chapels in Idle dated back to 1584 and 1630, but Calverley was the parish church for Idle]. One of these three fonts seen by Mee [cf. supra] is now [2007] outside, on the grounds, being slowly destroyed by the elements; it is a magnificent font carved by an expert hand; the basin is octagonal, but there are four large sides and four smaller ones, as if the latter were but the chamfering of a a square font; three of the large sides are decorated with tracery and plant/tree motifs, but the fourth has a beautifully rendered Baptism of Christ scene; these motifs are framed in varied pattern ornamentation skillfully carried out; the angles of the basin are buttressed, and the underbowl is decorated in fine simple tracery, the bottom of which appears to have used to delineate the niches that house the figures of the base; at the angles of the lower basin are animal heads, apparently all lion heads; the well of the basin is lined with lead; only four of the sides of the base have retained the figures in them: the symbols of the four Evangelists holding scrolls; the other four niches are now empty but it is quite likely there had been other figures in them originally. It is a beautiful font and should not be kept outside where it is desintegrating little by little. [We are grateful to Colin Hinson, of www.yorkshireCDbooks.co.uk, for his photographs of church and font]
