No individual entry found for Kirkstall in the Domesday survey. The entry for Kirkstall Abbey in the Victoiria County History (York, vol. 3, 1974) gives the foundation of the Cistercian monastery here and notes: "The monastery was surrendered by John Ripley, abbot, and the convent on 22 November 1540." In his description of the 19th-century church Mee (1941) notes: "In the baptistry, panelled with linenfold and enclosed by screenwork, is an oak font set on a marble base." [NB: we have no information on whether or not the font of the old abbey church -from ca. 1150- survived after Dissolution] -- [not known where the wooden font was originally from]
