INFORMATION

FontID: 11213NIE
Object Type: Stoup?
Church/Chapel: Iglesia de San Martín
Church Patron Saints: St. Martin of Tours
Country Name: Spain
Location: Huelva, Andalucía
Directions to Site: Located on the A472, 25-30 km ENE of Huelva capital
Font Location in Church: [It now serves as water fountain in the courtyard of the Casa de Cultura, in Niebla]
Century and Period: 5th - 7th century, Byzantine
Font Notes:
Noted in Ave verum corpus (2004?) as one of several Byzantine (?) capitals re-used for other purposes, in this case as basin for the holy-water stoup in the church of St. Martin, in Niebla; the same source notes that the base is a late-Roman Corinthian capital originally from elsewhere. Both pieces are badly worn, but some of the original motifs can still be discerned; the basin has fish and foliage motifs as decoration; the base, large leaves. The object was removed from the church and serves now [ca. 2004] as water fountain in the courtyard of the Casa de Cultura, in Niebla [a sorry destination which should not contribute much to its survival]. [NB: no specific mention of these objects found in Carrasco Terriza et al. (2006).
