Noted in Morris (1932): "At W. of S. aisle -- enormous, much mutilated bowl of a disused Trans[itional] font." Mee (1941) describes it as "the battered bowl of a Norman font." In Pevsner (1986 c1967): "Under the tower, font, C12, big circular trough with eight heavy spurs or ribs." The font appears now [July 2009] covered with a thick glass top and serving as a side altar [cf. recent photograph at http://www.flickr.com/photos/awmc1/3763317657/in/set-72157622975473479/ [accessed 15 June 2010]. It stands on a modern short circular base with a running inscription on its sides. [cf. Index entry for Ripon No. 1 for the later heraldic font in this church]
