Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Hatfield [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SE6609/hatfield/] [accessed 16 May 2018]; it mentions a priest and a church in it. Noted in Glynne's visit to this church probably in 1827 (in Butler, 2007): "The font is of curious form, almost approaching a quatrefoil, with mouldings and supported on shafts." Noted in Morris (1932) as a remarkable font from the Transitional period, "consisting of a circular drum surrounded by four circular shafts. De la Pryme, the Hatfield antiquary (who is buried in this church), says that it came from Dunscroft". Pevsner (1986 c1967) writes: "Font. The foot of c. 1300, thick shaft surrounded by four slimmer ones; moulded capitals. The bowl is C19." Noted and illustrated in the CRSBI (2018): "The font, like so much else here, is only marginally relevant to the Corpus. There is a broad circular plinth, probably original. The font itself is on four corner columns, with a central fatter column. The columns have cylindrical bases, a roll and tiny roll. They are tapered slightly, which is unusual. A plain upright ‘ring’ topped by a roll embraces all four columns, with an arris between each capital. The capitals are vaguely waterleaf shape, but with only a flat block on the outer angle. All four rings and capitals are integral. The top slab is modern.
