Font Notes:
There is an entry for Elmsett [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TM0546/elmsett/] [accessed 20 June 2025]; it reports "1 church. 0.12 church lands" in it. Parker (1855) reports a font "square on round legs" in this church. Noted in Cautley (1949) and (1982) as font of the 12th century covered in plaster. Noted in James Fielding [http://digitatlas.blogspot.com]: "Norman font with one arch on it (it looks like the decoration was never completed -- a side with a complete set of arches now faces the wall." Noted and illustrated in Knott (2009): the "Norman font sits on its blockish pedestal". The square basin is raised on a central shaft and four outer colonnettes, all round, as indicated in Parker above; the lower base is a square cube, and the plinth is also square and tiled at the top. The plaster mentioned in Cautley appears to have been removed now [October 2009] The wooden cover is conical, with moulded arrisses and a small knob finial; appears old, perhaps 17th- or 18th-century.
