David Tippey, of www.KirkbyMalham.info, notes a second font (?): "which is now [i.e., October 2005] being used as a flower planter outside the porch, has one longer side to the top band, suggesting that it was once against the wall. This is not accidental as the other facets are quite precise in their dimensions. So perhaps it wasn't originally a font either?" [e-mail messages to BSI on 4 August 2000 and 9 October 2005]. The polygonal basin has plain vertical sides and, as D. Tippey notes above, the larger side was probably intended to sit against the wall; the underwoul is hemispherical and plain; the round pedestal base on which it now stands has a square lower base and appears not to be the original. The object may very well have been [or used as] a baptismal font or a large holy-water stoup. As is the case with the two fonts at Birstall [cf. Index entries for Birstall Nos. 1 and 2], a new font replaced the olf Norman one, only to be replaced in turn at a later date by the old font.
