There is an entry for this Dunnington [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE6652/dunnington/] [accessed 18 October 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Glynne's 24 January 1866 visit to this church (in Butler, 2007) notes: "The font [is] a semi-octagonal basin against the pier of the tower arch." At some point in the past, probably in one of the two major rebuildings of the 19th century [one of them between 1839 and 1841 - cf. infra], part of the ancient font at Dunnington St. Nicholas' was used as building material for one of the walls, where the contour of the basin can still be discerned. Bulmer's Directory of 1892 notes the new font. The new font mentioned in Bulmer's consists of a plain bucket-shaped basin raised on a cylindrical stem, an octagonal-to-round lower base and a circular plinth; a white ceramic basin is inserted in this font as lining. The Victoria County History (York East Riding, vol. 3 (1976) notes: "Although parts of the fabric are earlier, a church at Dunnington was not mentioned until 1220 [...] The nave is small and perhaps 11th-century in origin. In the 12th century aisles with arcades of two bays were added to north and south, the former slightly the earlier, and the plain west tower is probably of the same date. The east end of the church was completely rebuilt late in the 13th century to provide a new chancel, in which the piscina and sedilia survive, and north aisle with a three-bay arcade. The removal of the chancel arch may date from that time or it may be a more recent alteration. The upper stage of the tower dates from the 15th century [...] All three aisles were rebuilt in 1839-41 [...] The plain font also probably dates from this restoration." [NB: the new font is not listed separately in this Index on account of the late date].
