view of church exterior - southeast view
Scene Description: Source caption: "All Saints in Manfield looks initially like just another Victorian church, but the tower looks older, as does the chancel with its ancient door in the south wall. In fact the building contains work from the 12th century onwards, much of it masked by the restoration of 1855."

There is a multiple-place entry for Manfield [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/NZ2213/manfield/] [accessed 19 November 2019]; it mentuons two churches in it. Sheahan & Whellan (1857) note that ''the pulpit and font are both of white stone, finely carved'', and, although no date is given, it appears from the context that these two furnishings are from the 1855 restoration of the church. Noted in the National Gazetteer of 1868. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 1, 1914) notes: "The church is mentioned in Domesday Book. [...] In the 12th century there was evidently a church here which consisted of an aisleless nave and chancel [...] The octagonal font is modern, as is all the rest of the furniture." Pevsner (1985) notes: "Font. An ornate High Victorian specimen." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: NZ2226813377] notes: "Church. C12, C13, C14, C16, restored 1855. [...] High Victorian font". [NB: we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church which dates back probably to the 12th-13th century]
