Font Notes:
No individual entry found for Husthwaite in the Domesday survey. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 2, 1923) notes: "The church dates from the 12th century [...] The octagonal font is modern, but there is a 17thcentury cover with a crown of four shaped pieces. It is inscribed 'Baptizetur unus quisque vestrum nomine Jesu Christi. Acta 2. 38.'" Morris (1931) notes a font cover of the 17th century bearing an inscription [cf. Inscription area below]. Pevsner (1985) notes only the font cover: "Jacobean, of awkwardly curved ribs", but does not mention the font itself. The font consists of an octagonal basin with plain straight vertical sides, raised on an octagonal-to-square pedestal base and a square plinth, all plain. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE5183175112] notes: "Church. C12 and C15 with C17 fittings and 1895 restoration. [...] octagonal font with thick stem and broached base, C17 cover with 4 ogee ribs and inscription "BAPTIZETVR VNVS QVISQVE VESTRVM NOMINE IESV CHRISTI. ACTA 2, 38"". [NB: the fabric of the church goes back to early-Norman times, and, according to Morris (ibid.), there is one "blocked Norm[an] 'Devil's Door'" [i.e., north side entrance] -- we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church].
