Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Croft [variant spelling] in the Domesday [https://opendomesday.org/place/NZ2809/croft/] [accessed 14 November 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 1, 1914) notes: "Enisan Musard or Murdac granted the church of Croft to St. Mary's Abbey, York [NB: Enisan Musard or Murdac (1060?-ca.1130?)] [...] It is evident that there was a church here in the 12th century, part of the west wall of its nave being still to be seen [...] The gradual development of the building is not very clear [...] The font is of the 18th century, and has a fluted marble basin on a square panelled stem." Pevsner (1985) notes: "Font. A large, fluted C18 urn, unusual and effective." There is a Sheela Na Gig (?) carving in this church [NB: although the church goes back to Norman times we have no information on the earlier font(s) here]. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: NZ2887709845] notes: "Church. C12, C13, C14 and C15, restored 1876 except for chancel, restored 1887-1900 [...] On the north window sill of the Milbanke chapel, part of an early C9 Anglo-Saxon cross shaft, with high quality carving of birds and beasts inhabiting vine scrolls, and near the north door, part of another cross shaft. [...] C18 circular marble font on C17 panelled square base. "
