Curwen (1932) reports on the grant of the church here to the Abbey of St. Mary of York, "confirmed to the abbot and monks by Bishop Athelwold between the years 1133 and 1156". An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in Westmorland (1936) reports: "There is no early list of the parishes included in the diocese of Carlisle, but the accounts for the deanery of Westmorland printed in the Taxatio Papæ Nicholai (Record Commission, pp. 319, 20 and 332), show that it corresponded very closely to the East and West Wards of the county. A charter printed in the Register of Wetheral (pp. 45–7), shows that the churches of Appleby, Kirkby Stephen, Ormside, Morland, and Cliburn were under the jurisdiction of Athelwold, the first bishop of Carlisle. At the date of Taxatio, the south-west of the county was included in the deanery of Lonsdale and Kendal in the archdeaconry of Richmond and the diocese of York." The font here is noted in Pevsner (1967): "Font. The shaft is round and Norman. Shallow zigzag pattern." English Heritage [Listing NGR: NY5876624490] (1968) notes; "Late C12 font at west end of south aisle has octagonal bowl (recut?), with moulded underside, on shaft with zig-zag decoration; moulded necking to chamfered base."
