view of church exterior - north view - detail

Scene Description: Source caption: "'On the north side of the church, over what was a Norman doorway (now a window) is a stone slab built into the wall - evidently part of the original structure - commemorating a tournament. Two knights, clad in close fitting mail shirts, and having tall pointed helmets, and with the kite-shaped shields and lances of the reign of Henry II (1154-1189) are fighting on horseback. One, the smaller and inferior in rank (for his lance bears no banner) has broken the guard of the other, who flings up his shield and drops his lance to receive the point of his conqueror's full in his face, in the vulnerable spot under the nasal of his helmet'."
