Cox (1913) notes: "Remains of an E[arly] E[nglish] font discovered during restoration, also part of a cross-shaft with nail-head moulding ; they have been built into churchyard wall." [NB: Cox lists the location as "Orton (St. Giles)" A modern font consisting of a square cushion-capital type basin mounted on a plain octagonal stem and lower base is illustrated in Visit Cumbria [http://www.visitcumbria.com/car/chc8.htm] [accessed 31 January 2010]. This same source notes and illustrates the modern cover which is inscribed with the ubiquitous Greek palyndrome 'NY[ph]ON...' related to the cleaning aspects of baptism, which appears in other fonts and font covers. Pevsner (1967) simply indicates that the "pulpit and font cover are neo-Norman".
