Font Notes:
In Bulmer's Directory of 1901where it is noted that "its design is a copy of one by the celebrated sculptor, Thorswalden." [source: digital transcription in www.stevebulman.c9.co.uk]. Pevsner (1967) writes: "Font. A kneeling life-size angel of metal. Given in 1883." The Visit Cumbria web site [www.visitcumbria.com] notes: "The font is of unusual design. It is a sculpture of a kneeling angel holding a large scallop shell, copied from a design in the Lutheran Cathedral in Copenhagen". [i.e., Danish original designed by Thorswalden]. This same source notes that "a recess in the west hall houses the baptistry, donated by the Freemasons of Egremont". Mannix & Whellan's History... of 1847, however reads: "The font is stone, and of an octagonal figure: it bears marks of antiquity, but it is painted." [source: digital transcription in www.stevebulman.f9.co.uk/cumbria/egremont.html] [NB: obviously the old octagonal font was in use in the older church ca. 1847, whereas the new font must have been installed on or after 1881, the date of the new church. We have no information of the whereabouts of the old font mentioned in the 1847 source]
