Eley (1900) wites: "The Font, standing on a fine marble flooring close to the west window, has bronze figures of St. John Baptist, the Virgin and Child, and St. Philip. It was designed by Sir A. Blomfield, and presented by Archdeacon Prescott 1891." The present baptismal font in Carlisle Cathedral is noted in Pevsner (1967): "Font. 1890 by Sir Arthur Blomfield. Gothic, with a boldly ogee-curved outline and three seated bronze figures." The BBC's article 'Passion & intrigue: the Cathedral's got more than The Da Vinci Code!' in 'Cumbria' [www.bbc.co.uk/cumbria/content/articles/2005/02/22/missing_cathedral_items_feature.shtml] illustrates the font and the now-missing cover: "The font has a tiled surround and steps up to it, with brass rails. But the most extraordinary thing about it was the intricate cover which was probably made of metal. No one seems [to know] where it is and Canon Weston simply can't believe that it was broken up." [NB: the article informs of a number of items that were stolen from the Cathedral, among them the font cover and a brass lectern with the usual eagle-in-flight].
