There is an entry for Cottingham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TA0432/cottingham/] [accessed 27 July 2014], but it mentions neither church nor cleric in it. Sheahan & Whellan (1857) write: ''the font is a large vase of stone'', but also inform that ''the church was built in 1272, and restored in 1845''. The present baptismal font is modern, consisting of an octagonal basin in the Perpendicular style, the vertical sides profusely decorated with tracery and a cusped triangular arch on each side, the lower sides of the arch ending in complex knows that overhang the underbowl; the inner well of the basin is lead-lined and has a central drain; the chamfer of the underbowl is decorated with a motif on each panel; the octagonal pedestal base is plain, perhaps a replacement of the more ornate Victorian original; octagonal two-step plinth; flat wooden cover with a knob finial/handle, probably modern. [NB: we have no information of the original font of the 13th-century church]
