There is an entry for Ampthill [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL0338/ampthill/] [accessed 17 September 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Victoria County History (Bedford, vol. 3, 2011] notes: "The advowson of Ampthill Church was granted by Henry D'Albini to the priory of Beaulieu at the time of its foundation (1140–6). [...] The nave arcades and chancel arch date from c. 1330 [...] the modern font stands under the tower". This modern font appears to be of the 19th-century, done in the style of the octagonal fonts of the Perpendicular style/period: octagonal basin decorated with deeply-carved tracery panels, the front one including a Christ in Majesty; the upper rim is chamfered and bears an inscription [transcription not available]; moulded underbowl chamfer; base also octagonal with attached angle colonnettes with moulded capitals and bases, all on a square lower base and rectangular plinth. Flat wooden cover decorated with metal ornamentationm and ring handle, modern. [NB: we have no information on the font of the original 12th-century church].
