There are three entries for Hinxworth [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL2340/hinxworth/] [accessed 20 October 2016], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. The Victoria County History (Hertford, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "The advowson of the church was held in the 13th century by the Cantlowes. William de Cantlowe presented in 1218 and 1236 [...] The general walling of nave and west tower, the north and south doorways and the windows adjoining them on the west, belong to the middle of the 14th century [...] The font is modern, but the remains of the old one, consisting of a circular basin with a plain square top, lie in the garden of the Glebe Farm. It appears to be of the late 12th century." [NB: we have not been able to ascertain whether the baptismal font at Hinxworth St. Nicholas' is a composite one made up of a modern base and a re-cut old basin, or simply totally modern, which is more likely].
