San Miguel de Escalada No. 1

The Boletin de la Real Academia de Historia [in http://descargas.cervantesvirtual.com/servlet/SirveObras/..] [accessed 28 August 2008], on its entry on San Miguel de Escalada [p. 409/122] attests to the visitation in 1604 of D. Andres de Casso, bishop, to the monastery church, and to the presence inside the church of the baptismal font. The font consists of a tapering square-to-round basin, the inner well square as well, and a drum-shaped base; the font appears plain except for a trace of rope morif where the basin joins the base; it appears monolithic, though. [NB: the caretaker of the Monasterio de San Miguel de Escalada and author of the monastery guide, Isidora González Fernández informed us on our visit to the Monasterio that the village church has a medieval baptismal font -- the keyholder was however absent and we could not visit it -- to be documented]
