Font Notes:
'On the ancient stone fonts of Cornwall' (1851) notes: "the font in the church of S. Clement, near Truro. It appears to be coeval with the north transept, which is Middle-Pointed, (and is probably circa 1365.) Till lately it was used to receive a stream of water by the road side, near the vicarage gardens. The bowl only remained, and it was erected upon a very plain modern base. The original base has been since found, but we understand it is not to be restored. The bowl is octagonal, having four large and four smaller sides, the larger being ornamented with flowing tracery." Described in Cox (1912): "Octagonal granite font is of 14th cent., tracery on 4 panels". Cox (ibid.) found "repellent" the fact that the stocks in this church "almost touch the font". Noted in Pevsner (1970): "Font. C16, octagonal, with tracery motifs." The shape of the basin and the stem could be described as square with wide chamfered angles, as well. The lower base is square.
