Church Notes: present church mid-14thC; tower 16thC
Described and illustrated in Kroesen and Steensma (2004) as a good example of a 15th-century bronze font from the workshp of the bell-casting Klinghe family of Bremen: "Heinrich [Klinghe, son of Ghert Klinghe] cast the East Frisian fonts in Pilsum from 1469 which rests on the four evangelists, and that in Uttum from 1474, which depicts the Baptism in the Jordan". The font is, like the others in this group and area, a bucket-shaped bronze basin raised on four standing figures placed at 90-degree angles; inscriptions run around the upper and lower sides of the basin; an arcade of stylised Ogee arches adorned with motifs and symbols runs all around the basin, the arches housing saints and or religious figures [at least one bishop with mitre and staff];, there are two scenes on the sides: the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan by John the Baptist, with an angel holding Christ's robe; the other scene is the Crucifixion, with Mary and John in attendance; interestingly there is no cross present, Christ shown floating in the air in the usual extended arm crucifixion stance; there are running inscriptions around the upper and lower ends of the basin sides [NB: the upper inscription includes names of saints (Anna, Mary Magdalen, etc.) but they do not match the figues in the arches below; the innscription around the lower side in cludes the date of the font, 1474]; a human head is visible at the upper rim with the telling perforation in the forehead through which the locking cover crossbar went; the basin is raised on four standing figures, each holding a book and facing outwards. The font appears to be now [2019] raised on a wooden platform on casters so the orientation of the scenes may not be used as it could if the font were fixed to the floor of the church.
