Font Notes:
Reported in Thomas (1983) as two "fragments of a tub font of volcanic greenstone, probably tenth century from the foundations of the pre-Norman church, Tintagel churchyard [...] The font is of the 'tub' variety, with small groove inside the rim for a circular lid, a central drain-hole and a raised footring showing that it stood, not on a pedestal or shaft, but on paved ground." Thomas (ibid.) adds that the font at St. Mary's, Potterne is "slightly larger though otherwise very close match to the Tintagel font". Blair (2005), after Thomas (1983) writes: "A tub-shaped font of volcanic greenstone, whose fragments were re-used in the footings of a probably late eleventh- or twelth-century chapel at Tintagel (Cornwall), might be claimed as pre-Conquest on these stratigraphic grounds." [cf. Index entries for Tintagel Nos. 2 & 3 for two other fonts listed for this church]
