Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Pinard (1986). Tozzini (1999) [www.ville-chooz.fr/memoire/patrimoine/] quotes a description from the Abbé Pinard's monograph in an hors série number of 'Ardenne wallonne' on Chooz: "une seule demi-cuve baptismale en pierre bleu de Givet, émerge du mur qui enchâsserait l'autre partie [...] ou bien, celle-ci était-elle cassée? [...]" The object is illustrated in Tozzini's article [www.ville-chooz.fr/memoire/patrimoine/images/]: it appears to be a wall-mounted polygonal holy-water stoup decorated with two human heads protruding in the style of the Mosan fonts. Although the article uses the term "cuve baptismale", and refers to several Mosan fonts in the area (Les Ayvelles, Braux, Perthes, etc.), this object was probably always a stoup rather than a font. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM08000152]: "Cuve octogonale en pierre de givet, cantonnée de têtes d'angle individualisées, différentes les unes des autres [...] 16e siècle". The illustration in Palissy is captioned: "fonts baptismaux cantonnés de têtes d'angle, pierre de Givet", referring to the dark limestone of Givet, similar to the one at Tournai.
