Noted in Ghislain (1986) as a fragment of the disappeared Romanesque font from Spiennes, near Mons; the illustration in Ghislain, a photograph of the fragment from the A.C.L., shows a portion of the basin side containing a full round arch and another half, and two robed figures, in a similar arrangement as those on the font at Merksem [cf. Index entry], probably representing the Apostles or the Evangelists. Inventoried and illustrated in BALaT KIK-IRPA [http://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10142008] [accessed 16 September 2021] as the fragment of the basin of a Tournai baptismal font dated between 1101 and 1200, and made of "pierre de Tournai"; the 'institution' [location?] is given as "Hôtel de ville [Spiennes]". Described and illustrated with references to Ghislain, KIK-IRPA, etc. in De Vriendt (2023): "The church of Saint-Amand in Spiennes (Mons, Hainaut) houses a piece of a Romanesque baptismal font carved in Tournai stone during the twelfth century. In 1952, it was extracted from a wall in the local cemetery and was the subject of short-lived attention before being thought lost for a very long time [...] Le fragment de pierre qui nous intéresse apparaît contemporain des premiǚres attestations écrites de l’église et, en particulier, de la donation de celle-ci en 1177 à l’ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem". De Vriendt (ibid.) adds that the fragment had been restored to the parish church of Spiennes in the late-1980s, but was removed for a short time to the Institut du Patrimoine wallon in 2003 for a light restoration ["En 2003, la pièce fut transférée un court temps à l’Institut du Patrimoine wallon, où— elle fit l’objet d’ue restauration sommair"].
