Font Notes:
Noted and illustrated in Frank Matthias Kammet's Taufstein und Taufgehäuse der Erfurter St. Severikirche: Formen und Symbolik, Originalveröffentlichung in: Thüringisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie, Bau- und Kunstdenkmalpflege (Hrsg.): Spätgotischer Taufstein mit Baldachin in der Erfurter Severikirche: Forschung, Untersuchung und Restaurierung. Erfurt 2010, S. 52 - 69. (Arbeitshefte des Thüringischen Landesamtes für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie, N.F. 35). Baptismal font of the mid-15th century, 1467; the basin is shaped in a variation of the earlier cushion-capital type, but now complicated with high-Gothic ornamentation; the upper basin sides has a narrow band of tendril or garland gilded on the surface of the stone, while the panels of the sides are deeply carved with tracery (?) motifs; the contours of the panels form Ogee shapes at the angles; the pedestal base is also decorated with Ogee tracery. The font cover is of a square plan, the arrises of the angles departing from the cover proper forming a pinacle. The font and cover are enclosed in a traceried baldaquin 17 m tall that contains a statue of a Madonna and Child in its midst. [NB: the baptismal font in the nearby Dom St. Marien, has also a tall baldaquin housing the font].
