Baptismal font of the late 16th century (1587) in the Baroque style, the work of Hans Fiedemann, the Elder; the font consists of an octagonal basin with a protruding upper rim decorated with mouldings and grotesque heads, the rounded sides and underbowl decorated with two sets of figures: at the angles demi-figures akin to the mascarons found on the prow of ships, whereas an angel holding a liturgical symbol protrudes from each of seven sides, the symbols of the seven virtues; between the figures runs a painted inscription with the names of the seven virtues in Latin on seven of the sides; the initial virtue, SPES, is preceded by the date 1587 in Arabic numerals; all the figures are set on a background of shallow foliage or scroll pattern; the front side has an angel holding a shield painted with a Latin cross with the initials S and P to the sides of the cross mast; the octagonal base has eight niches adorned with the same scroll pattern as the basin sides and topped with large shell motifs; four seated figures (they might be the Evangelists provided with books) stand out prominently; smaller figures populate the four alternate sides, the one at the front is a child holding a shield that is now blank but may have been painted originally. The whole font is painted. The octagonal wooden font cover has its eight panels decorated with the same scroll pattern seen elsewhere on the font; raised arrises; avian finial. A tall baldaquin houses font and cover; it has painted inscriptions at two levels [text not available].
