Finney (1871) writes: "It would be interesting to know where the ancient font was removed to which formerly belonged to this church, prior to the one givwn by Mr. Hooley in 1740". It does not seem that Finney's exhoration had much effect, since no news of that font appear to have turned up since. Pevsner (1971) notes: "Font. (Nave E), a robust baluster and a fluted bowl; 1744." Craig Thornber [www.thornber.org] mentions that the font is "of marble obtained from Castleton in Derbyshire". [NB: the Georgian Christ Church, in the same town, has a font of the late 18th century, not listed in this Index on account of its late date]. [NB: the church of St. Michael goes back to the early 13th century, but we have no information on its original font].
