Church/Chapel: Temple Church
Country Name: England
Location: Greater London, South East
Directions to Site: Located off (S) Fleet St, between Middle Temple Lane and Bouverie St
Century and Period: 12th century, Norman
Cognate Fonts: a modern copy of the medieval baptismal font at Alphington, Devon
Font Notes:
A tub-shaped baptismal font located inside this church. Although the original church dates to the mid- to late-12th century, the font, done in the style of the period, is a modern replica of the Norman font at Alphington, Devon. A broad band made up of circling tendrils housing inside a bird, a dragon, a hunter armed with bow and arrow, etc., runs around the basin over a blind arcade of intersecting round arches. Documentary proof on an earlier font of this church is found, among other sources, in The Kyre Park Charters (1905): "1590. Similar deed securing 500 to be paid by Pytt to Jernagan on June 24, 1592, on the fontstone of the church called church Church in Flete street, London, in which case the recognisance was to be void. Witnesses as before. Dated last day of May, 32 Elizabeth." Another deed in the same source: "1590. Similar deed securing the payment of 300 on 2nd February, 1591, on the font stone of the church Church in Fleet Street. Same witnesses. Dated 31 May, 32 Elizabeth." [NB: we have no information on the whereabouts of the medieval (?) font]
