Church Notes: original church 8th and 9thC, noth destroyed by fire; present building originally 1040; re-built 12thC; modified 13th, 15th, 18th and 19thC; much damaged in Allied bombings March 1945; re-built 1967; restaured and renovated 2006

Lübke (1870) notes an early Gothic font of 1279 with "eight representations in relief from the life of Christ, in which the artist, Master Eccardus, has introduced himself". Bronze baptismal font made by Meister Eckard aus Worms in 1279. On-site notes: the sides of the cylindrical basin are partitioned into eight sections by buttresses with top turrets; each of the sections houses a double trefoil arch richly cusped and pinnacled; the panels contain scenes of the Life of Christ [L->R]: Nativity, Annunciation, Maiestas Domini, Pentecost, Ascension of Christ, Resurrection of Christ, Crucifixion, Baptism in the Jordan; there are Latin inscriptions around the upper rim side, and on scrolls and other locations in the scenes; the detail is excellent and the font is in good state of repair; the basin is raised on a short stone plinth/base, modern. No cover present but the font is provided with a removable metal baptismal dish; by the look of the inner basin it appears that the font was originally meant to be used with an insert to hold the water.

In the Nativity of Christ on the block of stone under Joseph reads: AVE VITE VIA VIRGO MATER PIA EXEMPLUM HONORUM MATER MISERORUM ADJUTRIS BEATA ROSA DEO GROTA AURA PECCATORES. ANFER […] ORES. Baptism of Christ scene under the angel:, one of which, in the Baptism of Christ scene, names the maker of the font ‘[...] MAGISTRI. ECKARDI’ in † XPI.P. MAN[?]. MAGISTRI. ECKHARDI. DE. WORM[?].
