No individual entry found for this Newton in the Domesday survey. Paley's Guide (1844) notes: "The font is very interesting, date about A.D. 1200. The basin is square, chamfered to octagonal above. It stands on five shafts, with circular capitals, and square, circular, and octagonal bases." Noted in Kelly's Directory of this county for 1929 in much the same terms. The English Heritage entry for this church [Listing NGR: TL4353049159] (1962) notes: " Font, C13. Stone. Square basin with chamfered corners with large scroll stops. On column with moulded capital and base and similar subsidiary columns at corners." The Victoria County History (Cambridge…, vol. 8, 1982) notes: "Both at Hauxton and at Newton churches were established well before 1150. […] The small, dark church at Newton was named from ST. JAMES c. 1500, […] but by the 18th century from ST. MARGARET. […] The earliest part is probably the short nave, to which north and south chapels were added in the early 13th century […] The square 13th-century font, upon five squat columns, has its corners decorated with volutes."
