Font Notes:
There is an entry for Hildersham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL5448/hildersham/] [accessed 17 May 2016], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. A 1802 drawing of this font by Thomas Fisher is entered in the Catalogue of Drawings & Museum Objects of the Society of Antiquaries of London [http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/specColl/SoA_images/detail.cfm?object=1254] [accessed 13 January 2008]. Paley (1844) notes this as a font of the Decorated period raised on a five-support base. Noted in Kelly's Directory of this county for 1929 as "an early octagonal font". Described in Parker (1848): "Font octagonal supported by four pillars E.E." The Victoria County History (Cambridge..., vol. 6, 1978) notes: "Hildersham church had probably been established by c. 1150 [...] The oldest portions [of the present church], the vaulted sacristy and the west tower, are of the early 13th century. [...] The octagonal 13th-century font rests on five columns and has trefoiled canopies on each face." The Parish web site [www.members.aol.com/jimmynors/hildersham/] has a "Church Guide based on notes by Canon P.R. Phillips", Rector 1900-1948: "At the west end of the nave stands the font. The period asigned to the font is King John's reign. It is mentioned in the Vetus Liber Arc. Eliensis c.1278 'Pons cum secura', 'a font with a lock'. The font is of early 13th century date, octagonal in shape and supported on a central shaft and four other shafts. On each side is a canopy of delicate design. The circular basin is 23 inches in diameter and 13 inches deep; it is lined with lead, and has a perforation at the bottom to drain away the water [...] One of the staples still remains, and there are traces of the other to be seen. A new oak cover was provided in 1974 out of a bequest from the late D. G. Parrott of Linton, a worshipper and good friend of this church." Noted in Pevsner (1970): "Font. Octagonal, on polygonal supports. Bowl decorated with shafts carrying trefoil arches under gables; C13."
