There are two entries for Fowlmere [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL4245/fowlmere/] [accessed 9 June 2016], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. Pevsner (1970) writes: "Font. Perp[endicular], octagonal, with quatrefoil panels." The Victoria County History (Cambridge..., vol. 8, 1982) notes: "Architectural evidence testifies to the existence of a church in Fowlmere in the 12th century [...] The coursed rubble walls of the nave survive from a 12th-century church. Presumably it had a chancel, but c. 1300 that was replaced by a central tower and a new chancel was built"; the VCH entry mentions no font in it. The Parish web site [www.fowlmere.com/stmarys.htm] [accessed 25 October 2007] informs that: "the font is from the 15th century and still bears small bits of paint, which once decorated it. It is made of clunch [soft limestone] and lined with lead."
