No entry found for Bassenthwaite in the Domesday survey. The St. Bega website [http://www.stbega.org.uk/begahistory.html] [accessed 27 February 2005] informs: "The font is octagonal and dates from about 1300". Ditto in Rees (20003). The entry for this church in Historic Churches [Listing NGR: NY2266228748] notes: "Parish church. C12 and C13, with restoration of 1874" and mentions a "recut octagonal font."
The baptismal font consists of an octagonal basin with plain vertical sides, raised on a pedestal base; there are signs of repairs and stone replacement on the upper sides of the basin; the interior of the basin is lead lined. Plain wooden font cover, flat; appears modern.
