There is an entry for this Owston [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SK7707/owston/] [accessed 8 September 2015], but it mentions neither cleric not church in it. A font here is noted and illustrated in Upcott (1818). The Victoria History of the Counties of England (Leicestershire, vol. 5, 1964) notes: "The church of Owston was in existence by 1161 when it formed part of Robert Grimbald's foundation endowment of Owston Abbey. [...] Post-Reformation changes as well as 18th- and 19th-century restorations have so obscured the history of the fabric that it is hard to determine the relationship between the former abbey church and the present one. It has been suggested that the existing building represents only the chancel and north chapel of the abbey church. [...] The round-arched south doorway and a considerable part of the internal masonry of the south wall appear to date from the late 12th century. [...] The octagonal font has carved panels and is probably 15th-century work." The entry for this church in English Heritage [Listing NGR: SK7744607964] (1966), however, reports: "Parish church, fragment of former Priory. Partially C13 or earlier, with some early C14 and Perpendicular features, conservatively restored in 1861. [...] The font is [...] Victorian, octagonal basin with simple geometric motif on each side, supported on a chamfered squared base." The entry for Owston abbey in Ronald W Morant's The medieval abbeys and priories of England and Wales: a resource guide (Victoria, BC: Trafford Publishing, 2004) reads: "intact octagonal bowl & stem, with variety of carved motifs e.g. St. Andrew's crosson faces of bolw; C14"
