Font Notes:
No individual entry found for Grade in the Domesday survey. Cox (1912) writes: "The late Norm[an] font is supported by central shaft and 4 angle shafts with capitals reaching to the brim ; it is a plain example of the Bodmin type […] of characteristically Cornish design". Pevsner (1970) writes: "Font of the C13, a variation of the Bodmin type, similar to Cury: thick short corner shafts and four shallowly carved stars, rosettes, etc., in circles." Noted in the KerrierDeanery site www.kerrierdeanery.co.uk/GradeHist.htm : "The font is 13th century with thick short corner shafts and stars and rosettes in circles." Like many of the early -and later- fonts in Cornwall, the round basin has bulging capitals at 90 degree angles [heads in some Cornish fonts] that are the extension of the four outer colonnettes of the base; there is also a central shaft; the whole is raised on a quadrangular lower base. There is no cover present but the upper rim shows evidence of metal plugs in it. [NB: this font could be a 14thC+(?) version of the Bodmin type, as some of the elements of the decoration suggest].
