The Victoria County History (Bedford, vol. 2, 1908) notes: "The first mention that has been found of the church of Little Barford is in 1178, when a papal bull of Pope Alexander confirmed the church to the abbey of Ramsey [...] About 1310–20 the present north arcade was built [...] The font, in the north aisle, has an octagonal bowl with beaded angles, standing on five small columns, and is plain and perhaps unfinished as regards the panels of the bowl—it may be of fourteenthcentury date and shows traces of red paint." Noted in Pevsner (1968): "Font. Probably later C13. The panels of the bowl have just a plain beading. The supports are square with moulded bases and capitals." [NB: the CRSBI (2008) mentions and illustrates a holy-water stoup wall-mounted to the right of the south door; the CRSBI cites an earlier source. "an etching by Fisher dated August 23, 1815 [in which the stoup] is set into the porch wall" -- probably medieval, but date unknown -- not listed separately in this Index]
