There are ten entries for Diddenham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL0250/biddenham/] [accessed 10 September 2015], none of which mention cleric or priest in them. The Victoria County History (Beford, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "The church of St. James [...] appears to have had an aisleless nave and chancel in the 12th century [...] the font, to the west of the south door, dates from the 15th century and is octagonal with traceried panels on an octagonal stem." Noted in Pevsner (1968): "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with tracery patterns." The baptismal font consists of an octagonal basin with vertical sides, the panels deeply carved with chiefly quatrefoil patterns, some with rosettes inscribed; the inside well is lead lined and has a central drain; graded underbol chamfer; octagonal stem with large plain shields; moulded lower base. The font cover consists of an octagonal oak base, flat and plain, and four iron ribes that meet at the finial.
