Allen (1839?) writes: "The cathedral font is of veined alabaster, standing under the second arch from the west door between the nave and the south aisles. It is very large, and in form like an oval base, fluted, with a cover of the same character." A baptismal font dated 1726-1727, designed by John James and made by Francis Bird. The font is quite large, with a general chalice-shape; it consists of a round basin decorated with a pattern of deeply carved grooves or flutes, and a graded underbowl chamfer; the base is very narrow at the upper end but widens to a larger round lower base; matching cover. (ill. in Burman (2004: fig 2003)) [cf. other entries for this church for earlier fonts]
