Font Notes:
There are three entries for Southill [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL1442/southill/] [accessed 16 September 2015], none of which mention cleric or church in it. Lysons (1806-1833) note that the baptismal font in this Perpendicular church "is square, and has its sides ornamented with pointed arches". The Victoria County History (Bedford, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "The advowson of Southill Church was part of the original endowment of Newnham Priory [...] [i.e., 1166] by Simon de Beauchamp, as is confirmed in the second charter of Henry I, inspected in 1317 [...] the lower part of the tower is of stone and of mediaeval date [...] The font, which is modern and stands in the centre of the nave between the north and south doors, is octagonal with panelled sides." Pevsner (1968) notes only a modern font: "A fine piece with a shallow bowl, by Sir Albert Richardson, 1937." [NB: we have no information on the font of the 12th-century church here] -- [cf. Index entry for Clapham, Beds. as locals suggest their font may have been originally from Southill]
