Scene Description: although the source caption reads "The old font of the Parish Church of Ottery St Mary, Devon [...] The font itself can just be seen beneath the elaborate modern cover that incorporates many coloured marbles", this is the 19thC font that replaced its Perpendicular predecessor, of which a B&W photograph can be seen standing against the font cover [cf. FontNotes]

Cox & Harvey (1907) list a Perpendicular font in this church. Stabb (1908) notes: "The old font is buried beneath a modern construction of many coloured marbles, a fine font, but out of keeping with the church." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SY0985295580] notes: "Consecrated by Bishop Bronescombe in 1260. Altered and added to by Bishop Grandison circa 1330. Mainly Early English. [...] The interior was restored drastically mid C19 by Butterfield and others", but it mentions no font in it. [cf. Index entry for Ottery St. Mary No. 2 for details of the Victorian replacement font]
