There are two entries for Littleham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey, one near Bideford, another near Exmouth, neither of which mentions preiest or church in it. Oliver (1840-2) writes: "We could wish […] that the sculptured capitals of the pillars, and the beautiful font were cleared of the whitewash, or rather plaster, in which they are imbedded." Noted in Stabb (1908): "It is difficult to assign a date to the font, but it is not apparently of very early date, it is possibly Jacobean [ca. 1603-1625]". The English Heritage entry for this church [List Entry Number: 1317702] notes: "13th-century chancel, perhaps 14th-century arcades to the chapels, the remainder Perpendicular but with rebuilding of the N aisle and chancel arch and addition of the vestry at the 1883-4 restoration by R. Medley Fulford. [...] The principal feature is the screen stretching across both nave and aisle. It is medieval but was extensively restored by Harry Hems of Exeter at the 1880s restoration when the vaulting was added. [...] The late medieval font has an octagonal bowl with saltire cross decoration and a round base surrounded by polygonal columns." The parish church web site [http://littlehamcumexmouth.org.uk/churchlit.html] [accessed 3 March 2009] informs that the font was moved to the front of the nave in 1998 [NB: presumably it was located earlier in its proper place, at the west end of the nave -- the fabric of the building goes back to the 13th century but we have mo information on the earlier fonts(s) of this church]. Not mentioned in Pevsner (1952).
